Significant Curriculum Guidelines

Students will:

  • Study art media and processes
  • Learn about design and function
  • Study content and creative expression
  • Learn art heritage
  • Begin an inquiry in the arts
  • Pursue inter-disciplinary study
  • Appreciate aesthetics

Special Features

  • Understand and apply media through the use of painting, cutting, printing, clay and forms
  • Understand design and function such as the elements of design and primary colors
  • Learn content and creative expression by using personal experiences in art
  • View art heritage by looking at religious art, learn about styles and other types of art
  • Inquire into the arts by learning about mood, design elements and responses to art
  • Learn how to see art through other inter-disciplinary subjects
  • Learn how to respond to art through aesthetics. 
  • The Kinder-STAR (St. Teresa Art Review) program is taught throughout the year.  The students are presented up to five famous art pieces.  They will learn about the artist and the piece.  Then each student works through a project that tries to replicate or is inspired by the STAR piece

Evaluation

  • The students evaluate other works through our STAR (St. Teresa Art Program) art program.
  • Students receive a satisfactory grade on their report cards.

  • First grade students build upon the Kinder-STAR program in this year.  They will learn one piece during the STAR program and work through a creative art project based upon the famous work

  • Mix and use secondary and tertiary colors
  • Be introduced to the principals of design such as unity, variety, balance, rhythm, movement, contrast, emphasis, proportion, pattern, and repetition
  • Create works of art based on imagination, personal interpretation and themes
  • Learn about and appreciate various styles and types of art
  • Expand their knowledge of types of artists
  • Extend positive attitudes about the processes of looking at art
  • Use art terms to describe, analyze and interpret their own art and art of others
  • Identify connections between visual arts and other disciplines in the curriculum
  • Use aesthetics to analyze and interpret artwork
  • The STAR program (St. Teresa Art Review) program is taught.  In Second grade, the students learn two famous art pieces.  They review the First grade art piece and add to it with the Second grade art piece.

  • Be introduced to multi-step techniques
  • Experiment with various drawing and painting techniques such as sketching, contour, gesture, watercolor, dry brush and washes
  • Develop design concepts like color to express mood
  • Understand how light affects color, texture and forms
  • Explore content for works of art
  • Learn about historical changes in world art
  • Expand their knowledge of art styles
  • Become more acquainted with public art
  • Be introduced to art criticism
  • Understand similarities and differences between characteristics of visual arts and other art disciplines
  • Interpret artwork through aesthetics
  • The STAR program, St. Teresa Art Review, is continued.  Just as the past grades, the Fourth grade will review the past three art pieces they learned and add one more for their Fourth grade year.  The students will learn about the piece, the artist and the time in history.  They will also have a project inspired by their class piece.

Evaluation

  • Each daily art class will be graded for work ethic.  This grade will be 5 points. 
  • Other homework assignments or project materials to bring in with be graded for 10 points. 
  • Larger projects will be graded using a rubric which shows the student how many points each part of the project is worth.  Those points will be determined on a project to project basis.

  • Demonstrate a growing ability to organize and express ideas, feelings and moods in art
  • Produce a more advanced use of the design elements and principals of art
  • Compare the characteristics of artworks in various eras and cultures
  • Describe and place a variety of art objects in historical and cultural contexts
  • Apply their stills in art criticism to analyze and judge works of art
  • Use appropriate vocabulary as they respond to art
  • Consider relationships between the visual design and the subject
  • Compare art to other inter-disciplinary studies
